1971年7月至1972年2月,陕西考古工作者在发掘陪葬乾陵的章怀太子李贤墓时,在墓道西壁出土了一幅反映唐代马球运动的《马球图》。《马球图》全长8.2米,南端高1.7米,北面高2.4米,画面共有20多匹马,骑马人身着各色窄袖袍,着黑靴,戴幞头。最精彩的画面有5位骑者,打马球者左手执缰,右手执偃月形鞠杖(唐代打马球也称之为击鞠),最南面飞驰的马上坐一人,作回身反手击球状,另一人回头看
