Architectural design on the one hand and slowly changing traditional fragmentation, on the other hand with the traditional way of construction detached. All of these changes, be it objective, planned, or design-driven, generally have a decision-making process, a spiraling iterative process of thinking about what is needed and what can be done. It needs a framework for decision-making and construction. Open construction and smart construction provide an alternative to traditional construction strategies that give people the possibility of an open choice in the construction process and avoid material and process waste. The quality of the historic city and its buildings is depreciating in the functionalist movement, but now its value has been rediscovered. Design can learn from tradition because “tradition has become traditional because it works.” A series of projects demonstrate this idea and show the need to gain inspiration from traditional, small-scale, high-quality construction.
