The fuel of the future may soon come from ubiquitous sources - human waste. The researchers found a way to convert dirt into biomass crude, using what is known as hydrothermal liquefaction to create substances that resemble oil from the ground. The United States handles about 34 billion gallons (about 129 million cubic meters) of sewage daily, scientists at the Department of Energy’s Northwest Pacific National Laboratory said using the system could turn the wastewater into 30 billion barrels of oil a year.
