Mulller cells, a specialized glial cell, account for over 90% of the total cells in the vertebrate retina and play an important role in retinal development and functional activity. Recently, Mulller cells have demonstrated the potential of exhibiting retinal progenitor cell properties both morphologically and functionally. Mulller cells proliferate, de-differentiate and begin to express retinal stem cell-associated transcription factors when the retina is damaged by toxicity, eventually proliferating mu ller cells differentiate into retinal neurons. Thus, Mu ller cells can be a source of cells for retinal neuron regeneration, providing a bright prospect for clinical treatment of diseases such as degenerative retinal neurons.
