Since its establishment in 1921, the Communist Party of China (CPC) has undergone an epic journey. On July 1, a high-profile gathering was held in Beijing to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Party’s founding. President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, addressed the event.
Xi’s remarks revealed important information on the CPC’s future development. A good understanding of his ideas helps one to grasp the overall tendency of the direction China will take.
In his speech, Xi summarized the historic contributions the CPC has made to the Chinese nation, the significance of these contributions, and the experiences of the Party’s development over the past 95 years. This answered questions as to why history and the Chinese people have chosen the CPC as China’s ruling party and why only the CPC can lead the Chinese in transforming China from a conflict-ridden, povertystricken nation to an economic powerhouse. It underlines the importance of the Party’s leadership in the realization of national rejuvenation.
Xi’s remarks touched on a number of key aspects of the CPC’s work. He stressed that the Party should never forget its initial determination while forging ahead. As for the future, the Party will adhere to the guid- ing principles of Marxism, and by combining Marxist theory with China’s reality, the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics will be taken. The CPC will strive to double the country’s GDP and per-capita income from the 2010 level by 2020 in time for the centennial of the Party’s establishment. This transition to a moderately prosperous society will benefit all Chinese citizens.
By the middle of this century, when the 100th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China is reached in 2049, the objective is for China to have flourished into a rich, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious modern socialist country. The CPC will stick to the policy of reform and opening up and to the concept of peaceful development. Meanwhile, it will always try to remain progressive and incorruptible, improve its leadership, and strengthen its ability to negate risks and decay.
Some Western critics hold negative attitudes toward the CPC, even demonizing the Party at times during its 95-year existence. However, history and reality both prove that the CPC is the most qualified organization to lead the Chinese people forward.
Xi’s speech sent clear messages that the Party will continue to spearhead the nation’s drive for greater prosperity and more balanced progress on all fronts.
