Narcissism as a self-appreciation of mankind, the instinct of self-worship, often manifested as the protagonist of the work of preference. Guo Moruo, as the representative poet of the Romantic School during the May 4th Movement in China, embodied a rather strong narcissistic complex in his early poems. Due to the domination and influence of narcissistic complex, writers’ self-appreciation and cult evolve into preference for protagonists who represent themselves or who are similar to themselves in career, character, hobby and ambition. The idealized protagonist, as the object of expression and compliment, is in fact the self-incarnation of the author or the self-incarnation of the writer’s ideal. This manifestation and appreciation of its essence is the author’s self-centered performance, while the protagonist is the product of the writer’s narcissistic complex.
