Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) is a kind of special Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) in water. It has the characteristics of two phases of solid phase and low density, high C / N ratio , High viscosity and other characteristics, and thus the water ecosystem in the geochemical cycle play an important role. Through the review of domestic and foreign literature and the investigation of Taihu Lake, the current situation and dynamics of TEP research at home and abroad are summarized. The origin and formation, including abundance distribution, quantity and ecological significance are summarized. It should be noted that, although there are many studies on TEP characteristics in oceans at present, the research on TEP in freshwater lakes is still scarce. It shows that the role and importance of TEP in the geochemical cycle of nutrients is not fully understood. Future research directions should focus on the sources and formation mechanisms of TEP in freshwater ecosystems, in particular the interconversion relationship with other forms of EPS pools and between metabolism of microbes and phytoplankton (including cyanobacteria blooms) Related mechanisms, and TEP degradation, fate and circulation, as well as the impact on water ecosystems and so on. In addition, the impact of TEP on drinking water or wastewater treatment needs attention.
