Although only modest 3 mm, Chinese scientists not long ago created the world’s highest. They succeeded in synthesizing aligned 3-mm-long arrays of aligned carbon nanotubes that resemble toothbrushes in length, making it the world leader in making “superfine” carbon nanotubes, especially in synthetic methods. As a new member of the family of carbon crystals such as graphite and diamond, carbon nanotubes are highly ductile, highly conductive, both metallic and semiconductive, with a strength of 100 times higher than that of steel and only 1/6 of that of steel. Because of its peculiar performance, scientists called the future of “super fiber.” It’s very small, with 50,000 strands of hair lined up side-by-side, which is actually a fiber with a high ratio of length to diameter. Although the composition is the same as that of graphite, the potential use of carbon nanotubes is very attractive: very good fine probes and wires can be made that perform well
