Track and field athletes use a variety of techniques and equipment to accelerate their pace of performance, using high-tech methods of controlling overloading such as the Frappier system or common techniques such as uphill running and downhill running. Flametos system is the product of the American John Flapier design, mainly the application of overload control principle to improve speed. Athletes determine their respective strengths and weaknesses through six weeks of “first-level” practice, followed by exercises at different levels of “super-treadmill.” The 28mph super treadmill is key to the Frappier system because it is run under controlled conditions with flat runs and ramps (up to 40% grade).
