OBJECTIVE: To understand the willingness of intravenous drug users to continue participating in the HIV seroconversion positive cohort study and the reasons for their continued participation in cohort follow-up. METHODS: From May to June 2004, 48 participants from different periods of follow-up during the 18th month follow-up of the cohort of intravenous drug users in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province were interviewed for personal interviews. Results: The majority of respondents were willing to continue to follow-up on the cohort, but the main reason that affected the return visit was that they were afraid that the public security department would be caught in compulsory detoxification and migrant workers while returning home; and a very few were unwilling or unable to determine whether to continue The main reason for participating in the cohort is detoxification or several negative HIV antibody tests that they no longer have to continue to participate in the project and are afraid to come to the drug addicts and relapse on their way to the clinic. Most of the respondents who are willing to continue their follow-up visits are expected to be notified before the next follow-up date, and the more appropriate notification method is mainly the notification of peers or friends. The staff members directly call themselves and family members tell them. Conclusion: Most drug addicts in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province are willing to participate in follow-up of AIDS prevention and control cohort studies. However, they need to be informed by their peers or friends before the start of follow-up. There is a need to further strengthen effective follow-up methods to increase retention rates.
