Objective To assess the value of the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation System III (APACHEIII) in judging the severity, prognosis and clinical treatment of AIDS patients. Methods The clinical data of 116 inpatients with AIDS in our hospital from January to December 2003 were collected, including 95 survivors and 21 deaths. The APACHEIII score was used to evaluate the severity, prognosis and therapeutic effect of AIDS patients. Results The scores of APACHEIII and APS in the death group were significantly higher than those in the surviving group (P <0.01). The score of APACHEIII and APS at admission was significantly higher than that before discharge or death (P <0.01) Mortality was significantly higher in patients with time-sharing, the higher the APACHEIII score, poor treatment and high mortality. Conclusion The APACHEIII score has great value in the severity, prognosis and curative effect of AIDS patients.
