Structural Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images show some interesting features. Most of the palygorskite - sepiolite clays consist of 1 micron short fibers, while long fibers (> 10 microns) are only partially enriched. Long fibers are produced in small areas with shrinkage characteristics, indicating that they grow from the residual solution near the completion of the dehydration and are produced within the matrix of staple fibers. Long fibers form a sheet in the soil and grow perpendicular to the veins.
