The QTLs affecting insect resistance and susceptibility of the white -backed planthoppers, Sogatella furcifera, were analyzed in a diploid haploid (DH) population of rice indica and japonica. Although the parental lines of DH strain ZYY8 and Jing17 did not resist feeding, the feeding of whitebacked planthopper in 6 DH lines was strongly inhibited and may be super-parents. A microsatellite locus (QTL) affecting the secretion of honeydew was detected on the third chromosome of Japonica. Japonica rice parental line 17 has egg-killing resistance. The ovicidal properties in DH lines are manifested by the necrotic symptoms of oviposition on the leaf sheaths. In the early and middle tillering stages of the DH strain, four egg-killing QTLs were located on the japonica fragments on chromosomes 1, 2, 6 and 8. Another QTL appearing at mid-tiller was mapped on the indicia fragment of chromosome 9. At the tillering to the booting stage, the number of ovicidal sites was reduced to two. Analysis of the highest oviposition level for each DH strain throughout the experiment showed that there were 4 QTLs on chromosomes 2, 6 and 9. Two major QTLs were located in the japonica fragment of the adjacent chromosome 6. Three QTLs affecting the 2nd generation BPH nymphs were detected on chromosomes 1, 3 and 5. The QTL that plays a major role on chromosome 3 originated from the japonica rice. The microsatellite QTL on chromosome 5 originated from the indica rice. Two whitebacked planthopper-infecting QTLs are located on the 8th and 10th chromosomes of the indica-type fragment, and the other QTL is located on the 3rd-chromosome japonica fragment. These QTLs are thought to be related to the resistance of rice cultivars to whitebacked planthopper.
