This paper presents s ome results on different tail patterns of piers with an overflow dam, and di scusses in particular the hydrodynamic characteristics, the distance of water je t scour and the range of erosion area fluctuating for different parameters of av erage flow field when river beds are under the pressure of water jet scour cause d by some special broad-tail piers. The present paper also covers some prelimin ary research on the relationship of movable bed tests, and introduces the method of calculating the erosion depth and area, therefore provides the best pier pat tern in the construction of river beds against erosion.
