Phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is a key enzyme in the esterification of free cholesterol (HDh) in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), whereas esterified cholesterol ester (ChE) is readily transported and further metabolized This enzyme plays an important role in regulating serum total cholesterol levels. It is generally believed that hyperlipidemia, especially hypercholesterolemia, is one of the major causes of atherosclerosis. However, at present, the etiology and pathogenesis of hypercholesterolemia are still in need of further study. Therefore, it is important to understand the activity of LCAT and its role in hypercholesterolemia. This article only summarizes some of LCAT’s knowledge and its new developments.
