汕头早在清咸丰十年(1860年)开埠前后,就是举世瞩目的海洋强港。其港口来往船只总吨数居上海、天津、大连、汉口、青岛、广州之后,排行第七。其黄金时期,仅次于上海、广州,高居全国第三,被称为“中国通商第四口岸”。古代从汕头出口的瓷器,被外界称为“汕头器”。2007年5月下旬,在广东省汕头市南澳县云澳镇“三点金”海面发现“南澳一号”沉船。六七月间,广东省文物考古研究所组织专业水下考古工作队对“南澳一号”进行调查和试掘,2008年由该所水下考古研究
