Background: This prospective study examines the effects of endurance run-time wearing minimalist shoes and traditional running shoes on the function of the superficial medullae and the arch of the foot. The present study assumes that running in a minimalist shoe encourages hypertrophy in the superficial layers of the foot and leads to a taller, stronger, harder arch. Methods: 33 healthy runners were randomly divided into two groups: the control group wore traditional running shoes, and the test group wore simple running shoes. Subjects were scanned before and after 12 weeks of training with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the running dynamics before and after training and the arch height and stiffness. Results: Anatomical cross-sectional area and muscle volume of the subjects showed that short toe flexors increased by 11% and 21% in the control and experimental groups, respectively, and the area and volume of the toe extensor increased in the experimental group 18% and 22%, the longitudinal arch hardness also significantly increased (60%). CONCLUSIONS: Endurance Endurance The minimalist shoes worn 4 mm or less in thickness require more elastic function of the longitudinal arch, thus placing higher demands on the internal musculature of the arch of the foot to make the foot more robust.
