早期义和团产生地直隶、山东两省武侠文化深厚。义和团聚众攻教,具有武力捍卫乡人利益和信仰的正义性,而其为士绅集团歧视为匪的现象,说明团众的尚武行为具有模仿远古侠客行为的动因,本质上是士绅信奉之儒与团众信仰之侠的对立。后期团众为朝廷接纳为义民,则说明武侠思想和官方首肯的儒学观念具有高度和谐的可能。晚清直东地区旱灾及洋教泛滥,成为义和团起事的直接原因,团众将武戏、评书和演义小说中的侠客人物视为神祗,并设想自身为古代侠客的化身,以此期待拯救屡受打压的汉教民众,则为武侠理想在特殊环境下必然大规模萌发的例证。晚清特殊的政治气候迫使团众信奉的古典武侠思想转变成为极端的爱国主义、民族主义和具有审美精神的行为艺术。以侠济世、以武抗暴、以象征性武力游戏威吓洋教势力的行为,成为义和团民消解时代局限性的唯一正义性举证。
