In order to meet the requirements of safety, comfort and economy, the components of modern railway rolling stock have become extremely complicated. With the new digital information technology, the goal of automatic fault diagnosis, which must necessarily be included, is clearly approached. As the level of information available improves, fault analysis capabilities are also improved. Therefore, developments in this area extend towards decentralized processing units connected to the central fault storage unit via data bus systems. Special events and corresponding processing instructions are displayed on the display to the driver and stored in non-volatile read and write memory for service diagnostics. Data processing is done using a small display, printer, recorder or personal computer, so well-trained staff can quickly find the cause of the malfunction. Ultimately it must evolve into a routine wireless state inquiry, with the result stored in a fully computer controlled database.
