由于当代科学技术的迅速发展,人体内某些器官有缺陷或损坏后,可以象机器零件那样加以更换,这就使成千上万患有器官损伤的人们获得了延长寿命或恢复原有生理机能的机会。研究和制造各种人工器官的这一门学问称为生物工程学。而制造人工器官所用的材料,即所谓生物工程材料。这种生物工程材料必须满足以下条件: 1.无毒性及无刺激性,不会诱发癌症; 2.化学性质不活泼,不会与血液或其它体液发生化学反应; 3.具有抗血栓性,即不会在人工器官表面引起血栓; 4.植入体内的人工器官对周围组织(软组织、骨组织)不会发生抗原反应或抗体反应,以及不会引起周围组织的炎症;
