山东省发展甜菜糖业,虽然历史不长,但已经走过了一段曲折的道路。在70年代初,山东省种春甜菜,结果褐斑病越来越严重,含糖率很低。1982年高密糖厂甜菜块根含糖低到了10.04度,造成了工厂亏损,这样就导致山东省的糖厂由西向东倒闭。为了解决春甜菜含糖低的问题,中国农科院甜菜研究所科技人员,在山东省进行春播改夏播的栽培试验,获得了成功。于1983年起山东省的春菜全部改为夏莱。夏菜的含糖一般都在17度以上,这给山东省发展甜菜糖业开辟了一条新路子。
