The Chinese Government wants to eradicate poverty by 2020.
Now, two years are left for this goal to complete. Some 40 million rural poor people living in the most severely impoverished conditions remain for the government to help. The costs and challenges of accomplishing this mission are bigger than those related to helping less impoverished people, and with the limited amount of time available, the task can only become increasingly diffi cult.
In order to reach the target on schedule, the Central Government has redoubled its efforts to help local governments in poverty alleviation. This year, President Xi Jinping has visited many places to inspect and direct such work.
The Chinese Government has established a targeted poverty alleviation mechanism featuring the filing of information of people living in poverty and the assignment of certain groups to help them. There is also a model under which the government plays a leading role and the society is encouraged to join in poverty alleviation by supporting industries, relocation and re-employment. For those who are unable to take advantage of these favorable policies and are thus still scrambling in poverty, the state has special policies to ensure their basic living standards. The poverty alleviation project also benefits the children of impoverished families. They are given fair access to quality education so that poverty won’t pass down to the next generation.
Besides, the government also helps impoverished people to gain better access to health resources and provides them with basic medical services so as to prevent people from being dragged into poverty by illness. These mechanisms and methods are expected to help realize the aim of poverty reduction by 2020.
Reducing poverty, improving people’s livelihoods and realizing common prosperity are essential aspects of socialism and also an important mission of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Since the late 1970s, China has exerted itself to alleviate poverty and incorporated the task into its national development strategy. With 30 years of endeavors, more than 700 million rural people have been lifted out of poverty. China has made the largest stride in poverty reduction in the world. The poverty alleviation effort led by the CPC is a great contribution to the world’s poverty alleviation cause.
The CPC has put forward the blueprint of the Chinese dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. One prerequisite to realize this blueprint is that all Chinese people shake off poverty and are able to enjoy the fruits of economic and social development. Despite various diffi culties ahead, the Chinese Government and the Chinese people are confi dent of lifting all people out of poverty by 2020.
