A series of diphenylene ethers with different electron-withdrawing substituents were synthesized using the Wittig route. Their electronic structures were determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The electronic energy levels of the oligomers were modeled using quantum chemistry calculations. The relationship between absorption spectra, emission spectra and the electronic structure of chromophores is discussed
