Optical fiber in actual use, which is able to withstand common mechanical and chemical stresses, is affected by both short-term and long-term effects. Short-term effects include crack size and distribution, chemical nature and thickness of the coating, depending on the fiber’s manufacturing process, manufacturing environment, and product specifications. The long-term effect is a factor that decreases the mechanical strength of an optical fiber over time, and it is related to the applied stress and the chemical action that the optical fiber can withstand. Screening tests are one way to ensure the useful life of a fiber; measuring the fatigue resistance of a fiber in a specific chemical environment is a quality factor that determines the long-term mechanical reliability of the fiber.
