The magnesium plant at Marignac, PEM: Pechiney Electromellurges, is shrouded in a closed atmosphere. As the only magnesium smelter in Europe with more than 200 employees, until recently the plant with a production capacity of 1700-1800mt / y was almost fully loaded with about 10,000mt pure magnesium ingot. However, booked sales in 2000 were only 290 million francs and operating losses were 7400 francs. In the last five years, PEM invested 60 million francs in the Marignac smelter to retrofit equipment, with little success. The book loss in 2001 will also reach 40 million francs. One of the reasons that forced the closure of the Marignac smelter was the small size of the equipment and the outdated technology; the other reason was the drastic offensive of China to export large amounts of magnesium to Europe.
