For the record, unlike Chinese historians before him, Sima Qian(145-90 BC) opposed the idea that the course of history is set by Heaven or God, and instead upheld that people, in fact those of any background, are the deciding force. The result was the forerunner of the historical biography, a literary format adopted by the official recordkeepers of Chinese history for all dynasties following the author’s seminal work.
