Most of the black images in American literature in the 19th century were self-deprecating and self-conscious. By the 1920s, with the rise of the Harlem Renaissance, the black image of literary works started to seek personal independence and freedom and began to have a sense of resistance. Tom in “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and Borg in “Native Son” are the representatives of two distinctly black images.
