The egg takes a long time to mature in the ovary. Researchers believe there is a mechanism in the organism that assists the ovaries in ensuring that the released eggs enter the reproductive tract at the highest chance of fertilization. Researchers on Drosophila ovulation and fertilization success can clarify this process. Studies by Allan Spradling and Jianjun Sun at Carnegie Institutions in the United States found that secretions from specific glands in the reproductive tract of Drosophila play an important role in ovulation and sperm function, and hormone receptor gene Hr39 regulates this secretion. Their findings also suggest that the receptor gene Lrh-1, which is closely related to Hr39 in mammals
