词汇是构成语言的三大要素中最基本、最活跃的因素。人的思维是借助词汇进行的,人的思想感情是通过词构成的句子来交流的,没有词,语言就不可想象,离开词,语言就将会是“皮之不存,毛将焉附”。词作为语言的建筑材料,其性质和特征就决定了它不是孤立存在的。一方面它与语音、语句、句型、课文相结合,另一方面它又在听、说、读、写中得到体现。因此,学生词汇量的大小以及词汇运用掌握的熟练程度便成为衡量学生英语水平的标准之一。
Vocabulary is the most basic and most active element of the three major elements that make up a language. People’s thinking is carried out by means of words. People’s thoughts and feelings are communicated through sentences formed by words. Without words, the language can not be imagined. When the words are left, the language will be “skinless and hairy ”. Word as a language of building materials, its nature and characteristics of the decision it does not exist in isolation. On the one hand, it combines with voice, sentence, sentence pattern and text. On the other hand, it is reflected in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Therefore, the size of the students vocabulary as well as the proficiency of vocabulary used to become one of the criteria to measure the level of English students.
