Between the two world wars, the middle class emerging from the middle class in Britain kept expanding the middle class, and the class structure and culture also changed qualitatively. Among the literary works of this period, young people in the lower middle class are often conceived of as new class identities and as symbols of England. Rose McCauley’s “Sustaining the Decent” and Elizabeth Bowen’s “Death of the Heart” depict the differences and conflicts among the different groups in the middle class and see the potential for a new class of culture on the lower floors of young women. In the social and cultural contexts of the rise of the middle class and youth leisure culture, this paper will discuss the performance of class and liquidity and the modern “middle class” in the context of these two medium sized novels and analyze the potential of the text The contradictory position.
