Objectives To evaluate the relationship between job-related stress and job satisfaction (JS) and social support (SS) among Chinese nurses working abroad. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted on 111 Chinese nurses working abroad and compared with the findings of 234 foreign nurses. Results The SAS of Chinese nurses working abroad was higher than that of foreign nurses (P < 0.05). Almost all of the stress factors working abroad (except work burden) were significantly positively correlated with SAS (P < 0.01). There was a negative correlation between JS and SS and SAS (r=- 0.472 and r=- 0.232, P <0.05). There is a positive correlation between SS and JS (r=0.22, P<0.05). Conclusion The findings of this survey support the conclusion that the nature of nurses is tense. Chinese nurses working abroad are more nervous than foreign nurses. All stressors are related to work-related tensions and dissatisfaction with work; social support plays an important role in the relationship between stressors and work-related tensions.
