瑜伽作为一种有效的强身健体、舒缓精神压力的锻练方法被大众接受,却是20世纪50年代以后的事了。当时,重视呼吸和各种体位练习的哈他瑜伽被斯瑞·克瑞斯纳玛查雅、B.K.S.艾扬格等人介绍到西方,在西方国家引起不小的轰动。从那时起一直到现在,瑜伽可以说是风靡全球, 其练习者不乏名人。
