OBJECTIVE: To process and integrate olfaction is the key to the formation of olfactory memory. In this study, the relationship between olfactory exploration behavior and activation of cortical neurons in piriformis was observed in starvation rats. Methods: Rats were fasted for 48 h. Fluorochrome was injected into the olfactory bulb and the changes of olfactory exploration behavior in rats were detected by burying food. The number of FG positive cells in the anterior part of the piriform cortex was detected by serial coronal sections. The cortical neuronal activity was detected by c-fos immunofluorescence. Results: Starvation promoted olfactory exploration in rats. The number of FG positive cells and c-fos positive cells in piriform cortex were significantly higher than those in control group. CONCLUSIONS: The hunger-promoting olfactory exploration behavior is related to the activity of neural cells in piriform cortex and the projection of olfactory bulb to piriform cortex.
