In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Berlin was the center of naturalist literature in Germany, while Vienna opened up a new world of German modernist literature with impressionism or symbolism. Herman Barr is the only critic and writer who directly participates in literary activities in both centers. In Berlin he is the editor of Freedom Stages, the foremost naturalist journal of nature; in Vienna he became the organizer and advocate of Youth Vienna. He published a series of theoretical and critical articles in Berlin and Vienna, bringing the modernist Vienna to an innovative style in the German literary world and establishing a stand-off with the naturalism in Berlin, laying a solid foundation for the development of German modernist literature .
