BP Texas City Refinery Explosion On March 23, 2005, an explosion at BP’s Texas City refinery in southern Houston, Texas, caused explosions and fires in the refinery’s isomerization plant that left 15 people dead More than 170 people were injured. The immediate cause of the accident was misoperation by the operator, resulting in a hydrocarbon fractionation above the control temperature of 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
