南京云锦是我国丝织工艺中艺术成就最高的一种,始于元,成熟于明,发展于清,是一种用大量金(捻金、缕金)装饰织物花纹的提花丝织物,因其绚丽多姿,美如天上云霞,晚清以后被命名为云锦。云锦在元、明、清三朝一直是皇家御用贡品,是我国优秀传统文化的杰出代表,被公认为“东方瑰宝”、“中华一绝”。自元朝以来,封建王朝在南京专设官办织造局来督造云锦,用做帝王龙袍冠带,嫔妃霞帔丽服和宫廷饰物,同时还作为朝廷礼品,馈赠外国君主和使臣,亦是赏赐王公大臣的珍品。南京开始有丝织,可以追溯到三国东
