五代后梁时(公元304～439),日本慧锷和尚在五台山得到一尊小巧精致的观音佛像,准备带回日本建寺供奉。慧锷乘船顺江而下到了东海。这天,船到普陀山海面,突然起了风暴,只好在普陀山抛锚落帆。第二天,风平浪静,慧锷又扬帆启航。可是船刚驶出山岙,海上突然烟遮雾罩,久久不散,慧锷只好又返回岙内停泊。第三天,晴空万里,风平浪静,慧锷慌忙启航,可是船一出岙口,天色转眼就变了,风起浪涌,慧锷心一狠,继续往前驶。可是,没驶出多远,帆船突然像生了根似的,停在海面上,进退不得。这时;海面上漂来了一朵朵铁莲,转眼间整个普陀山海面全是铁莲花,把船围在中间。慧锷大惊,慌忙跪在观音佛像
