[New Scientist, April 23, 1987] In the event of a nuclear war, the U.S. Department of Defense hopes to secure its military base in case of power failure. The Pentagon is considering whether to install a small nuclear power reactor at its major military facilities around the world, including the United Kingdom. Government officials have denied that the proposed reactor must be “reinforced” to withstand the nuclear attack. They said that if commercial power cannot be supplied due to accidents or damage, these reactors will supply the necessary power.
