Walter Benjamin combines the formal analysis of works of art with social theory to depict and analyze the modernity of art in a unique way of social and historical analysis. In his opinion, the “light and light” in traditional art works is replaced by the modern experience of “shocking”. This change of aesthetic concept is a sign of entering an era of full-scale mechanical reproduction. Benjamin’s view affects the re-examination of popular culture by postmodern scholars since the middle and late 20th century, and is still of realistic significance against the backdrop of the prevalence of digital technology in contemporary “super-replication.”
