Dubois in his The Soul of Negro mentions that blacks are “double-conscious” under racial discrimination. By characterizing this type of person, Morrison shows that black people may face the danger of being assimilated by white culture in a double sense. Blacks are both Americans and blacks. They are two values. They inevitably exist in a black body. However, how to maintain one’s own nationality in the white mainstream society has always been a deeply troubling issue for every Negro, and Morrison holds a clear-cut critique of these assimilated characters in her works. The veteran and the housed have a commendable attitude.
