The disintegration of the Soviet Union put all its institutions at risk. One of them is the so far the world’s largest optical institute, the St. Petersburg State Institute of Optics. Will it continue to exist? I stayed there for two weeks last fall to understand what I could understand. I found many uncertainties, but I rarely hurt. However, when I wrote this article in January of this year, people there were already hurt. The Institute has been under the Ministry of National Defense Industry, and the Ministry has been cancelled. Its power is gradually being handed over to the new Ministry of Industry of the Russian Republic. However, the latter’s goals and budgets have not yet been determined and may not be determined in time. It is difficult to avoid major confusion and losses. . Last year’s days were bad. Due to the chaos of Moscow’s ministries and the foundations of various activities and reports, the annual plan has not yet been approved. The situation is not good from the very beginning. There is no such plan.
