More than 260 years ago, “Gothenburg” came to Guangzhou along the Silk Road and opened a brilliant page in the history of trade between Guangzhou and Sweden. In 260 years, it was only a flick of a finger in history. However, Guangzhou experienced an evolution from the ancient commercial port “Canton” to Guangzhou, a modern metropolis that the world has drawn great attention nowadays. Since the reform and opening up, with its rapid economic growth and opening up to the outside world, Guangzhou has attracted investors from all over the world to start its own business and utilized a total of 34.8 billion U.S. dollars of foreign investment. 142 Fortune 500 multinational corporations have invested in Guangzhou and 303 projects have been set up with a total investment of 9.612 billion U.S. dollars. In 2005, the total foreign trade volume in Guangzhou reached 53.488 billion U.S. dollars, of which the trade volume with Sweden was 133 million U.S. dollars, up by 10.35% over the previous year. As of 2005, Sweden invested a total of 11 projects in Guangzhou, mainly in the fields of information and communication, auto parts and environmental technologies, etc.
