乔治·艾略特的小说《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》结尾的洪水一直是学者们评论的焦点之一。兄妹俩为何在洪水中和解?这一问题引起了国内外许多学者的关注,但至今难有定论。本文把小说放在工业化这一时代背景下进行考察,并结合“洪水”的原型意义,尝试对小说结尾的洪水提供一种新的解读:洪水象征了轰轰烈烈的工业革命,它给人类带来了巨大的破坏性和毁灭性,但其客观的再生性为人类创造了重生的机会。
Floods at the end of George Eliot’s novel The Mill on the Frills River have been among the focuses of scholars’ commentary. Why brother and sister reconcile in the flood? This issue has aroused the concern of many scholars at home and abroad, but so far it is hard to determine. In this paper, the novel is put under the background of industrialization. Combined with the archetypal significance of “Flood ”, this paper attempts to provide a new interpretation of the flood at the end of the novel. Flood symbolizes the vigorous industrial revolution, Came a huge devastating and devastating but objective rejuvenation created a human chance of rebirth.
