The world’s first Castrip direct belt equipment was put into operation in May 2002 in Newark, Indiana, USA, located in Crawfordsville. In terms of strip quality and throughput, equipment operation has been continuously improved since the first strip was rolled. The cast strip has been cold rolled, galvanized and processed into structural panels for commercial sale. The equipment has also undergone several important milestones, such as continuous emptying of ladle and continuous casting of two bags. Originally limited to plain carbon steel products, and then extended to ferritic stainless steel. Nucor has a structural plan for introducing the product to the market, starting with a 1.6mm billet followed by a thinner cast strand; an online hot rolled product; a higher carbon steel grade and a higher strength product. Initially, Nucor consumed all the products in its downstream processes, which enabled close attention to the product. A key feature of this technology is that it broadens the scope of what is commonly known as harmful trace elements such as copper and tin; it is more economical to invest in because of its relatively small equipment size and tight schedule. These features make Castrip tape technology particularly well suited to market conditions and industrial requirements in Southeast Asia.
