This paper argues that the miracle of export growth, with consumer goods as its main content in China’s coastal areas, is achieved through the massive import of advanced machinery and equipment from abroad. This is a rational response driven by the export-oriented strategy of enterprises in coastal areas to the more stringent quality standards in the international market, and the failure of the domestic equipment manufacturing industry to provide qualified manufacturing equipment. The phenomenon can be described by the terms “import for export” or “import-induced export”. In this paper, the preference of product quality is introduced into the trade model of monopolistic competition. It is found that after the product quality is improved, the demand of international market faced by consumer goods manufacturers will increase. Importing suitable machinery and equipment can increase the short-term export scale and profit of consumer goods manufacturers, The overall export expansion of the industry.
