担当是明末清初的遗民,集诗、书、画“三绝”一身。他曾明经取士,后又遁入空门,归隐林下,身份的多重性,使得他的艺术作品表达也颇为多样并具有矛盾性,在中国画的历史舞台上独树一帜。在明末清初的历史时代背景下,党争使得政治腐朽黑暗,多数文人选择归隐,规避灾祸。担当作为当时的一名隐士,他看透了时局的复杂,救国无望,可又有匡济天下之心。其内心的纠结,致使他选择了与青灯古佛相伴,而禅学中关于“空”的思想,使其得以慰藉,并将这种思想注于笔端、流于纸上,所以担当后期的绘画艺术作品呈现出荒寒空简冷逸的面貌。其绘画呈现出的“简
