British Aerospace recently announced a series of validation tests of its LASERFIRE air defense missiles in Dubai, UAE. The Laser Sword Missile System was able to detect targets 10km away and capture at 7km. The system uses millimeter-wave surveillance radar to search for targets and then automatically track with very narrow laser beams. Once the laser beam intercepts the target, the system’s computer begins to calculate whether the target is or will be within range of the weapon. When the target enters the range, it signals the striker that the Sagittarius will immediately launch a 2Ma Sword Missile using a trigger or near-miss fuse Intercept. The test was conducted in two days and a total of seven missiles were fired. The first missile exploded prematurely and the subsequent two succeeded in destroying the target aircraft.
