Early Spring is the Best Time of a Year-Reading and Appreciation of Han Yu's EarlySpring Written for Secretary Zhang Ji
We Chinese always have particular expectations for spring. The ancients' impulsesto write poems were also aroused in the early spring. They were eager to express inpoems their tender feelings and observations. I think Early Spring Written for SecretaryZhang Ji, a seven-character quatrain by Han Yu, is exactly such a delicate poem aboutthe beautiful observations by the poet:
A creamlike rain moistens the royal streets-
Green grass can be perceived from afar but not near-by.
It's the best time of a year-
Better than hazy willows beclouding the city.
I was born in Xi'an. As a child, I used to romp around with friends in the street whenthere was a light rain in spring. Therefore the creamlike spring rain in Chang'an and thegreen grass in the field perceived from afar but not near-by are really fresh to me.
In the first line of his poem "A creamlike rain moistens the royal streets", Han Yudepicted vividly the early spring in ancient Chang'an. The rain started sprinkling, andthe light rain fell smoothly. The use of "creamlike" to describe the unique scene of lightrain falling on the royal streets is extraordinarily ingenious, creating a poetic effectsimilar to that of Du Fu's Happy Rain on a Spring Night, which reads 'Good rain knows itstime right; It will fall when comes spring. With wind it steals in night; Mute, it moistenseach thing.'
The second line 'Green grass can be perceived from afar but not near-by' ismarvelous. In February, early spring, the grass in Chang'an began to sprout after alight rain. Looking from afar, there seemed to be a land of green grass in the dewy mist. But as one approached, it seemed to have disappeared. The poet is like a master of inkwash paintin g, who sketched with his magic pen the awakening scenery of early springin Chang'an. "It's the best time of a year; Better than hazy willows beclouding the city."In Tang poetry, poets mostly praised the bright late sp ring. But in his poem, Han Yuexpressed that the early spring was the best time of a year, much more beautiful thanthe late spring when the capital was veiled in willows. Actually, spring is beautiful at anytime. By using the literary device of contrast, Han Yu aimed to show his good mood whenhe saw spring coming round to the earth again and everything looking fresh and gay.
In this poem, Han Yu depicted delicately his subtle observations with beautifullines and refreshing words. Just like a painter filling in colors on a sketch, he describedby accident or designed the characteristics of early spring, the best time of a year, withwords overflowing with moisture, ease and refreshment of early spring.
Han Yu is a famous thinker, educator, great litterateur and master of languageduring the mid Tang dynasty, who initiated a unique poetic style of "putting commentsinto poems and taking prose as guidance".
