《老实人》(1759)是法国启蒙思想家伏尔泰(Voltaire,1694—1778)最优秀的一部哲理小说。中译见《伏尔泰小说选》,傅雷译。主人公老实人原来信奉“一切皆善”的哲学,但是他的种种倒霉的经历,恰好证明这个世界并不完善。小说是对封建专制主义的有力抨击,在书中,贵族、教士、国王都被揭露得淋漓尽致。他为《老实人》英译本所作插出版于1930年。构图与笔法明净、洗练,略带讽刺笔调,并且追求程序化的装饰性效果。英译本印制讲究,扉页、书尾都有装饰画。文中每隔几行在引语前后都嵌进肯特所绘的小小人体,或卧或跪或匍匐或斜倚,姿势各异,足见肯特也是一位别具巧思的书籍装帧家。后图第一幅即是该书的扉页。
Honest Man (1759) is one of the best philosophical novels of the French enlightenment thinker Voltaire (1694-1778). In the translation of “Voltaire novels”, Fu Lei translation. The protagonist honestly believed in the philosophy of “everything is good,” but his unlucky experience proves that the world is not perfect. The novel is a powerful attack on feudal absolutism in which nobles, priests and kings are exposed. He made the translation of the English version of “Honest People” in 1930. Composition and writing are clear, practiced, slightly satirical, and the pursuit of procedural decorative effects. The English translation of printed exquisite, the title page, book end have decorative painting. The text in every few lines before and after the quotes are embedded in the small body painted by Kent, or lying or kneeling or prostrate or reclining, different positions, it shows Kent is also a unique book binding device.
