The conclusion of the meeting in Sao Paulo is that multidisciplinary is the key to bringing scientists out of the ivory tower. In science, where is the end of what can be tolerated, and where the intolerable thing starts? Are scientists responsible for it as a knowledgeable person and also as a citizen, and if so, what is the responsibility What is the nature and to whom is the scientist responsible and responsible to the government of the society to which they belong? These issues have become the subject of scientific, scientist and tolerance organized by UNESCO and the University of São Paulo (Brazil) from 18-21 November 1997 International Symposium on the topic of intense debate. Some 130 scientists from 15 Latin American and North American countries attended the meeting as part of the 1995 International Year of Tolerance follow-up.
